ASN and KHI Show Support for KidneyX in Meeting with HHS Secretary Alex Azar

KidneyX_logo_0.PNGThe American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and members of the Kidney Health Initiative’s Patient and Family Partnership Council (KHI PFPC) met with leaders from across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) including Secretary Alex Azar on Wednesday, May 16 to show their support for KidneyX.

KidneyX, a top priority for and a public-private partnership between ASN and HHS, is a series of prize competitions aimed at accelerating innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases. KidneyX seeks to improve the lives of the 850,000,000 people worldwide currently affected by kidney diseases by accelerating the development of drugs, devices, biologics, and other therapies across the spectrum of kidney care including prevention, diagnostics, and treatment.

Members of the KHI PFPC were able to share their personal stories with kidney diseases and how they believed patients could support KidneyX with HHS Secretary Alex Azar and key HHS leaders from FDA, NIH, and CMS.

The patient’s voice is crucial in the success of KidneyX and the development of innovative therapies that are meaningful and effective in the eyes of the patients that will use them. Innovators participating in KidneyX will be encouraged to collaborate with patients and their care partners while developing solutions.

KidneyX’s pilot round of prize funding focused on accelerating the commercialization of and patient access to next-generation dialysis products will begin accepting applications in 2018.
