Robert W. Schrier, MD, is the 2009 recipient of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) Medal of Excellence Award. Each year, AAKP “honors a renal physician who has achieved outstanding success in caring for kidney disease patients, while also possessing extraordinary skills and devotion in the field of nephrology.”

Willem Johan Kolff, MD, PhD, consummate inventor, doctor, researcher, and professor, died February 11 at his home in Newtown Square, Penn. Dr. Kolff saved millions of lives with his creation of the artificial kidney, which evolved into today’s kidney dialysis machine. The Dutch-born doctor was 97.
