CMS Implements 5-Star Rating System for Dialysis Facility Compare

CMS has introduced the 5-star rating system to the Dialysis Facility Compare website to help patients make informed decisions when choosing a dialysis center. Ratings range from 1 to 5 stars and reflect a facility’s quality of care based on 9 standardized measures. A 5-star rating indicates a dialysis center scored within the top 10% (“much above average” quality of care compared to other facilities), whereas a 1-star facility scored in the bottom 10%. The system’s bell curve distribution methodology is controversial, since it mandates a maximum of 10% of facilities will receive a 5-star rating and up to 30% of facilities will receive 1- and 2-star ratings.
