Candidates, Applications Up in Pandemic-Shortened Nephrology Fellowship Application Cycle

Applications for nephrology fellowships in the first month of a pandemic-shortened application cycle were up according to Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) data showing nephrology application through August 17, 2020, rose 49% compared with July 2019.

Partial August data hinted at potential renewed interest among US allopathic residents, with candidates totals equal to those seen across the entire 2019 cycle (79 US MDs). International medical graduate resident numbers were flat compared to the same period (214 candidates), but osteopathic candidates declined 15%. Although cumulative candidate totals through the first two weeks of August were flat, cumulative applications are still up 30% compared to 2019.

Although cumulative candidate totals through the first two weeks of August were flat, cumulative applications are still up 30% compared to 2019.

Yet these preliminary application numbers still fall below the range of first-year nephrology fellows over the past three years (412–429 PGY-4s). The ASN Nephrology GME Census for academic year 2020–2021 reports 406 first-year fellows reported for duty on July 1, 29% of whom acquired their positions after the Match. With 150 nephrology training programs now accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, it remains to be seen if internal medicine resident demand will be adequate to completely fill available fellowship positions.
