A Special Thanks to Nephrology Nurses

ASN celebrates nephrology nurses for their hard work and commitment to improving the lives of patients with kidney diseases.

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) celebrates Nephrology Nurses Week (September 11–17, 2022) to express its admiration and appreciation of nephrology nurses—those exceptional and talented individuals who regularly apply their vision, knowledge, and skills to achieve results and improve patient outcomes. Together with the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA), kidney community, hospitals, dialysis facilities, and others—ASN is honored to take part in this celebration of nephrology nurses and recognize the lifesaving care they provide each day to patients with kidney diseases.

“On behalf of the American Society of Nephrology, I would like to extend my gratitude to all nephrology nurses,” says ASN President Susan E. Quaggin, MD, FASN. “Caring for patients with kidney diseases requires highly skilled, caring, and motivated individuals, which has made nephrology one of the most diverse nursing specialties practiced today.”

Nephrology nurses make a positive difference in the lives of patients and families every day. They are instrumental in helping patients live their best possible lives. According to the National Kidney Foundation, about 37 million people in the U.S. (more than 1 in 7 adults) are affected by kidney diseases. In 2018, 785,883 Americans had kidney failure and needed dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive (2 in every 1,000 people); 554,038 of these patients received dialysis to replace kidney function and 229,887 lived with a kidney transplant.

“It is a privilege to work side-by-side with such talented and dedicated individuals who are irreplaceable members of the nephrology team,” adds Dr. Quaggin. “Your unwavering dedication to caring for others and your perseverance—often in times of crises—is inspiring.”

Launched in 2005, Nephrology Nurses Week offers employers, patients, and others an opportunity to say thank you and highlight the multifaceted career opportunities available in nephrology. Nephrology nurses—who care for patients of all ages who have, or are at risk for, kidney disease—comprise one of the most diverse nursing specialties practiced today.

“Thank you for playing such a key role in our shared vision of creating a world without kidney diseases—we cannot achieve this goal without you!” Dr. Quaggin recognizes.
