Project Title: Establishing Evidence to Manage Geriatric Syndromes in Hemodialysis Patients

How would you sum up your research in one sentence?

  • I use health services research methodologies to design novel models of care to manage and prevent geriatric syndromes in adults with advanced kidney disease.

Provide a brief overview of the research you will conduct with help from the grant.

  • I will study the association of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) (i.e., medications with risk that often outweigh benefits in older adults) and physical function (e.g., gait speed, chair stand) in dialysis patients. The PIMs of interest include muscle relaxants, opioids, sedatives, and orthostasis-causing antihypertensives (e.g., clonidine). I will also uncover patient perspectives on taking potentially inappropriate medications and attitudes about deprescribing.

What inspired you to focus your research in this area?

  • As a fellow, I was most concerned about the frail older patients receiving dialysis in the hospital, and how hard it is for them to navigate the health system.  With the aging of the population, we need research that insights changes in care delivery to support these patients, as well as, work to slow or prevent development of geriatric syndromes in our dialysis population.

What impact do you hope your research will have on patients?

  • Ultimately, I hope my research findings will engage adoption of practices to find and manage geriatric syndromes in adults with advanced kidney disease.

In one sentence, please describe the importance of having grant funding available through the ASN Foundation.

  • This grant funding is important for new ideas to be explored and challenge the status quo in kidney care.

What advice would you give to others to encourage them to apply for this grant funding?

  • Allow considerable time to preparing your application.
