Acceptance into PMC, MEDLINE, and ESCI is crucial for the success of a scholarly journal, and being recognized at this level gives credibility to the content and increases its discoverability.
ASN’s newest journal, Kidney360, has passed a rigorous review process for acceptance into PubMed Central (PMC), a free digital repository that archives open access scholarly articles published in biomedical and life sciences journals. Now all of the journal’s content is available and indexed in PMC . Future articles will be deposited to PMC with each monthly issue release.
Kidney360 has also been fully accepted to MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine (NLM)’s premier bibliographic database that indexes selected journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine. Additionally, the journal has been accepted into the Clarivate / Web of Science: Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). This index contains quality publications, selected for editorial rigor and best practice at a journal level. This is the first necessary step to qualify for a Journal Impact Factor, a scientometric index that reflects the yearly mean number of citations of articles published in a journal in the last two years. Kidney360 will need at least another full year or two of publication before its Impact Factor can be properly calculated.
It began accepting manuscripts in 2019. As a global, peer-reviewed, open access, online only, general kidney journal, Kidney360 publishes scientifically rigorous basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, health policy, population science, and global health kidney research.
Shortly after the journal launched, Editor-in-Chief Michael Allon, MD, shared his vision in an interview . “My goal is that Kidney360 will become a well-regarded nephrology journal that readers across the world want to read and to which authors want to submit their manuscripts,” he said. “I would also like to increase engagement between readers and authors and between readers and editors, by leveraging a broad range of social media tools.”

In 2021, Kidney360 published 287 articles, including 116 original investigations, 15 brief communications, 4 innovative technology and methodology pieces, 21 editorials, 11 basic science for clinicians segments, 29 review articles, 4 clinical research methods, 21 perspectives, 3 patient perspectives, 14 global perspectives, 18 debates in nephrology, and 31 clinical images in nephrology and dialysis.
Kidney360’s Global Perspectives feature has gained significant interest in the last few years, as it offers viewpoints from nephrologists who work abroad. Authors offer important information and insights about how various kidney conditions, including acute and chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation are managed in different countries across the world.
The journal recently honored its top five reviewers of 2021: Fahad Aziz, Neetika Garg, Emily Joachim, Arnaldo Lopez-Ruiz, and Sandesh Parajuli. “They willingly provide timely expert assessments of scientific papers without expecting payment or public recognition,” said Allon. “Without their ongoing commitment, our peer review process would fall apart.”
