On Monday, June 15, 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that civil rights law protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination, extending workplace protections to millions across the nation. While this is a wonderful victory for the LGBTQ community, steps backward in other areas continue to undermine LGBTQ equality.

On Monday, June 15, 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that civil rights law protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination, extending workplace protections to millions across the nation. While this is a wonderful victory for the LGBTQ community, steps backward in other areas continue to undermine LGBTQ equality.
Transgender individuals, specifically transgender women of color, continue to be one of the most vulnerable populations facing multi-faceted discrimination and life-threatening violence. The recent rollback to civil rights protections in the rule implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) eliminates explicit protections from discrimination based on sex stereotyping and gender identity that have existed, further exposing transgender individuals to discrimination against accessing health care services. This is a significant affront to the LGBTQ+ community during a global pandemic and proliferation of racial violence.
Most recently, in response to a call to action from the Association of American Medical College’s gender equity initiative, ASN is issuing a statement on gender equity targeted to all genders underrepresented in medicine including women, transgender, and non‐binary individuals.
ASN Statement on Gender Equity
The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) is committed to promoting diversity, inclusiveness, and equity to enhance the nephrology profession and the lives of people with kidney diseases. ASN recognizes that gender equity is a key factor in the growth and success of the of Nephrology and Medicine at large. As part of its diversity, inclusion, and equity efforts, ASN will work to promote gender equity for genders underrepresented in medicine including women, transgender, and non-binary individuals. ASN will continue to work to address inequities among its speakers, committee members, grant and award recipients, and leadership. The society will regularly examine the demographic data of its programs to track progress, as well as examine its policies to work to remove existing barriers to equity. Through these efforts, ASN will work toward a more diverse and equitable field that will foster innovation, creativity, and sensitivity, advancing health for all people living with kidney diseases.
