The webinar had over 400 attendees and fostered an engaging discussion about the initiative's goals.

The AAKH initiative was announced by the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services on July 10.  It is a new HHS-wide kidney health strategy designed to confront the ever-growing burden of kidney diseases on over 37,000,000 Americans, their families, and caregivers.  The initiative and its accompanying Executive Order establish the following three objectives as official U.S. policy:

  • Reduce the risk of kidney failure
  • Improve access to and quality of person-centered treatment options
  • Increase access to kidney transplants

Discussed during the webinar, and included in the slides below, were details of the Executive Order, the policies outlined in the accompanying HHS report and the five payment models. The discussion also covered directives in the Executive Order to improve support for living organ donors the procurement of organs from deceased donors.

Discussed during the webinar, and included in the slides below, were details of the adjustments to payment models that the Executive Order is putting into motion. As well as specifics on how kindey donations can be increased by impoving deceased and living donation.

The AAKH initiative reflects many of the policy priorities ASN has advocated for and the society encourages you to learn more about these policy changes by downloading the slides below, engaging with ASN policy updates, and ASN social media .
