The Living Donor Protection Act of 2019, a longstanding priority of the ASN Policy and Advocacy Committee and the larger kidney and transplant community, has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives and Senate by Representatives Jaime Herrera-Beulter (R-WA) and Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and Senators Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) and Tom Cotton (R-AR).
On February 15th, 2019, American Society of Nephrology (ASN) President Dr. Mark Rosenberg sent a letter to the lead sponsors of the legislation to commend their efforts to provide hope to the more than 700,000 Americans with kidney failure, including the nearly 100,000 people on the waitlist to receive a kidney.

On February 15th, 2019, American Society of Nephrology (ASN) President Dr. Mark Rosenberg sent a letter to the lead sponsors of the legislation to commend their efforts to provide hope to the more than 700,000 Americans with kidney failure, including the nearly 100,000 people on the waitlist to receive a kidney.
Addressing the sponsors, Dr. Rosenberg added that “[y]our important legislation guarantees that living donors have access to life, disability, and long-term care insurance with full coverage and without higher premiums – a difficulty currently experienced by 1 in 4 living donors. By removing this barrier, and codifying Family and Medical Leave Act protections for living donors to take time off work to recover from their donation surgeries, your important legislation will likely help countless Americans receive the gift of life”.
Increasing access to transplantation – including removing barriers to living donation -- has been a historic pillar of ASN’s congressional advocacy. Every day, 10 Americans die waiting for a kidney transplant, yet despite great need, living donors often face significant barriers to donation. ASN has continuously called on Congress to pass the Living Donor Protection Act and has made the bill a central feature in its communications with Congress, including convening several community-wide advocacy events to support the passage of the bill.
ASN, along with partner patient and professional societies in the kidney and transplant community remain committed to passing the Living Donor Protection Act in this Congress. Writing to the sponsors of the legislation, Dr. Rosenberg stated:
