The goal of the ASN Kidney STARS program is to stimulate interest in nephrology careers by targeting medical students, residents, and graduate students with an interest in nephrology but who have not yet committed to applying to a fellowship. In addition to tailored events and networking opportunities, this program provides travel support, complimentary registration to attend the ASN Annual Meeting at Kidney Week, and complimentary membership to the society.

The visualization included by ASN Data Science Officer Kurtis Pivert provides an overview of the educational breakdown of STARS participants from 2012 through 2017. Participation in the program among undergraduate students, medical students, and graduate students has increased overall. Resident participation has seen a decrease since 2012, but the society is hopeful that these numbers will continue to rise in future years.
