Project Title: Proximal Tubule Secretion: A Complementary Marker to GFR in Kidney Disease

How would you sum up your research in one sentence?

  • I am interested in assessing proximal tubular secretion as an alternative marker of kidney function in chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Provide a brief overview of the research you will conduct with help from the grant.

  • With help from the ASN grant I hope to determine net differences in tubular secretory clearance among major causes of CKD and to assess association of proximal tubule secretion with metabolic complications of advanced CKD.

What impact do you hope your research will have on patients?

  • I hope that my research will uncover additional measures of kidney function that are physiologically and clinically significant and improve disease diagnosis and prognosis in CKD.

What are your short- and long-term career goals?

  • At the end of the ASN grant period I plan to apply for career development awards. Ultimately I hope to become an independently funded physician scientist with a focus on improving the lives of patients with CKD.

What inspired you to focus your research in kidney diseases?

  • My research work is inspired by my patients with CKD. The desire to improve diagnosis and treatment in this vulnerable patient population motivates my research work.

Describe the importance of having grant funding available through the ASN Foundation.

  • The support of the ASN Foundation is pivotal for the career development of research fellows and allows them the valuable time that is needed to focus on their research and plan for career development awards.
