How would you sum up your research in one sentence?

  • My research aims to identify clinically relevant AKI phenotypes for the enhancement of guidelines for risk stratification of AKI patients.

Provide a brief overview of the research you will conduct with help from the grant.

  • Using Department of Veterans Affairs electronic medical record data, I will leverage advances in statistical methodology to identify distinct acute kidney injury patient types by tying together risk factors, etiology, changes in kidney function over time, and risks of adverse outcomes. Identification of these patient types may be leveraged in the future to enable more targeted care of AKI patients.

What impact do you hope your research will have on patients?

  • There is an opportunity to expand on current clinical guidelines for the risk-stratification of AKI patients, as well as guidelines for the care of patients post-AKI. I hope my research will help pave the way for a big data-driven precision guided approach for intervention and treatment for patients with acute kidney injury.

What are your short and long-term career goals?

  • I hope to continue taking steps towards becoming an independent researcher, further expanding my capabilities as a biostatistician and clinical epidemiologist, and contributing to research on kidney disease.

What inspired you to focus your research on the kidney?

  • Kidney disease is one of the major non-communicable diseases where we continue to see increases in the burden of ill-health in the US and Globally. I hope to be a part of the efforts to address this.

In one sentence, please describe the importance of having grant funding available through the ASN Foundation.

  • Grant funding from a leading organization in the study of kidney disease provides critical assistance for early career investigators, serving as a pillar of support for a career in kidney disease research.
