ASN Kidney Week 2021: Hybrid for the First Time

This year’s Kidney Week Education Committee and ASN staff are planning the first-ever hybrid Kidney Week to include in-person and virtual components. “Hybrid” can mean different things to different people, and ASN’s goal is to ensure a meaningful experience for every participant.

ASN’s annual meeting, Kidney Week, is the world’s largest and most dynamic meeting of kidney professionals, where participants share their work, learn about the latest advances in the field, develop new collaborations, and listen to provocative exchanges between leading experts. In a “normal” in-person year, Kidney Week reaches approximately 13,000 participants with 5,000 abstract submissions.

Due to COVID-19, Kidney Week 2020 was “reimagined” as a fully virtual event, under the leadership of the ASN President, Anupam Agarwal, MD, FASN, and Kidney Week Education Committee Co-Chairs, Linda F. Fried, MD, MPH, FASN, and Jon B. Klein, MD, PhD, FASN.

Highlights included:

  • 10,300+ total registrants (42% international).
  • Five Early Programs with record-breaking registrations.
  • Nearly 2500 ePosters with 42,000+ views.
  • 81 virtual exhibits with 12,500+ views.
  • Up to 75 CME/CNE/CPE credits and MOC points for the Annual Meeting portion.

Co-chaired by Deidra C. Crews, MD, MS, FASN, and S. Ananth Karumanchi, MD, this year’s Kidney Week Education Committee and ASN staff are planning the first-ever hybrid Kidney Week to include in-person and virtual components. “Hybrid” can mean different things to different people, and ASN’s goal is to ensure a meaningful experience for every participant (regardless of virtual or in-person participation).

Highlights include:

  • Six Early Programs, fully virtual with on-demand content on Monday, October 25, and live-streamed sessions on Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27.
  • Four exceptional plenaries, in-person and live-streamed, with a joint opening with the National Academy of Medicine featuring a COVID-19 panel.
  • 100+ educational sessions, in-person, live-streamed, and on-demand.
  • 2500+ posters, in-person and virtual.
  • Robust scientific exposition, in-person and virtual.
  • Various networking opportunities, in-person and virtual.
  • All meeting content available to all in-person and virtual participants on the Kidney Week platform until Friday, January 7.

There are still uncertainties and challenges relative to COVID-19. ASN follows best practices recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and will abide by the legal mandates from the state of California at the time of Kidney Week 2021. Please view our Health and Safety Policies for more information. These policies are subject to change.

Please join ASN and the kidney community on this hybrid adventure, whether in-person or virtual. The early registration deadline is Wednesday, September 15, 2021.
