ASN Hosts Virtual Meeting on Expanding Access to Kidney Care for Undocumented Individuals

Providing equitable care for undocumented individuals is both a humane and economically sound decision.

On October 1, 2024, ASN hosted a virtual community meeting with kidney care advocates representing 23 states to discuss and review strategies to expand access to kidney care for undocumented individuals. Due to the efforts of state-level advocates, 20 states in the United States have already implemented reforms to provide undocumented individuals with access to in-center dialysis, 5 of which also include transplant coverage.

Advocates from several states without expanded coverage asked questions about their unique legislative and regulatory challenges. They reviewed successful advocacy strategies with individuals who have already helped their state expand coverage. They also discussed how to expand care by adding kidney failure as a covered condition under emergency Medicaid in order to reduce burdens on patients, clinicians, and health care systems—demonstrating that providing equitable care for undocumented individuals is both a humane and economically sound decision.

ASN is incredibly grateful to the advocates that spoke to the community about their experiences so the group could network and collaborate to find successful advocacy strategies to implement in their own state.  As interest in this topic continues to grow, ASN will continue to host community meetings and advocate for equitable and quality kidney care access to all individuals in the United States.
