ASN: 21 Highlights in 2021

Every member of the ASN Alliance for Kidney Health is excited to help elevate care, drive breakthroughs and innovation, educate and inform, and propel policies that create momentous changes in kidney health. To accomplish these goals and others, ASN and the rest of the alliance will:

1. Launch the ASN Health Justice Committee to address health disparities and influence social determinants of health in populations at risk for and overburdened with kidney diseases.

Every member of the ASN Alliance for Kidney Health is excited to help elevate care, drive breakthroughs and innovation, educate and inform, and propel policies that create momentous changes in kidney health. To accomplish these goals and others, ASN and the rest of the alliance will:

1. Launch the ASN Health Justice Committee to address health disparities and influence social determinants of health in populations at risk for and overburdened with kidney diseases.

2. Initiate the ASN Loan Mitigation Pilot Program to reduce the loan burden for six recipients by $50,000 over three years. First-year awards will center on individuals racially underrepresented in medicine.

3. Update ASN COVID-19 Resources.

4. Engage division chiefs, fellowship training program directors, and program coordinators via virtual town halls.

5. Strength the pipeline by increasing interest in nephrology careers, which includes recruitment of DOs to nephrology.

6. Introduce the new ASN eLearning Center.

7. Continue to reimagine ASN Kidney Week and the ASN Board Review Course and Update.

8. Deliver eight issues/modules of nephSAP and KSAP.

9. Publish nearly 50 issues of JASN, CJASN, Kidney360, and ASN Kidney News.

10. Enact ASN’s strategy to ensure new therapies are adopted to provide high quality care to people with diabetic kidney disease through the Diabetic Kidney Disease Collaborative.

11. Expand ASN’s compendia to include both acute kidney injury and diabetic kidney diseases.

12. Develop infection prevention education for nephrologists, dialysis facility team members, and people on dialysis through Nephrologists Transforming Dialysis Safety.

13. Catalyze innovation through the Kidney Health Initiative’s pre-competitive collaborations to reduce barriers in bringing new drugs, devices, and biologics to people with kidney diseases.

14. Accelerate disruptive approaches to kidney replacement therapy by cultivating a new community of innovators through the KidneyX Artificial Kidney Prize (https://www.kidneyx.org/).

15. Provide more than $3 million in funding to nearly 50 clinicians, researchers, and educators through KidneyCure (https://www.asn-online.org/foundation/).

16. Address systemic racism in kidney care through policy changes through advocacy with Congress, federal agencies, and the Biden-Harris White House.

17. Continue expansion of federal policies and programs that prioritize and fund upstream kidney care, increased transplantation, kidney patient choices in modalities and therapeutics, and research and innovation.

18. Educate kidney health professionals and scientists about the transformation of kidney medicine in the next decade through an awareness campaign.

19. Distribute podcasts of interest to the kidney community, including policy issues and summaries of articles published in ASN’s journals.

20. Unify ASN members and other stakeholders through ASN Communities and myriad social media channels.

21. Help you hire the right person (or find the right job) via the ASN Career Center.
