CMMI Anticipates Later IOTA Model Start Date

Work on the final rule continues.

Responding to recommendations made by ASN and other organizations regarding the proposed Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) model, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) announced recently that it is “anticipating a later start date for the model than the proposed start date of January 1, 2025.”

In voicing its strong support for the IOTA model goals of growing transplant rates and increasing transparency for people awaiting a kidney transplant, ASN urged CMMI to give potential participants more time than proposed to prepare for success.

“The changes that many programs will need to institute to achieve the kinds of gains that CMMI is looking to incentivize are substantial, such as investments in workforce and infrastructure,” wrote ASN President Deidra C. Crews, MD, ScD, FASN in the society’s comments to CMMI regarding the proposed IOTA role. “Smaller programs, in particular, might struggle to muster the resources needed to begin to make meaningful interventions on a short time horizon.”

In its announcement regarding the later start date, CMMI affirmed that work on the final rule is ongoing. A recent article in Kidney News offers further information about IOTA and ASN’s recommendations to strengthen the model and position participants for success.
