On March 31, American Society of Nephrology (ASN) President Anupam Agarwal, MD, FASN and National Kidney Foundation (NKF) President Holly Mattix-Kramer, MD, MPH urged Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Pete Gaynor to accelerate the production and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health care professionals and vulnerable populations during this national crisis.
On March 31, American Society of Nephrology (ASN) President Anupam Agarwal, MD, FASN and National Kidney Foundation (NKF) President Holly Mattix-Kramer, MD, MPH urged Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Pete Gaynor to accelerate the production and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health care professionals and vulnerable populations during this national crisis.
The 37 million Americans with kidney diseases—particularly the more than 500,000 on dialysis and more than 222,000 with kidney transplants—are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, and both ASN and NKF are focused on ensuring they receive the highest quality care in the context of the coronavirus outbreak.
“It is crucial for health care professionals on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic to be properly equipped with PPE so that they can safely treat their patients. We must increase our supply of PPE to protect our most vulnerable citizens and the healthcare providers who take care of them” said Michelle Josephson, MD, FASN, ASN Policy and Advocacy Committee Chair
Both ASN and NKF believe it is still necessary to release more PPE from the national stockpile and issue additional guidance to ensure that high-risk and frail patients—like dialysis and transplant patients—have priority access to life-saving personal protective equipment, along with our nation’s healthcare providers.
