ASN continues to move forward on its commitment to dismantle systemic racism in nephrology. These are complex issues that can limit the ability of nephrologists and kidney health professionals to provide optimal care to patients or to reach their full career potential.

In addition to recently launching the ASN Health Care Justice Committee, chaired by O.N. Ray Bignall, II, MD, FASN, ASN has:

  • Hosted a webinar facilitated by ASN Past President, Anupam Agarwal, MD, FASN, entitled Going Beyond the Statement: Dismantling Systemic Racism in Nephrology.
  • Partnered with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) to support a joint Task Force on Reassessing the Inclusion of Race in Diagnosing Kidney Diseases.
  • Summarized its ongoing efforts to dismantle racism and disparities in kidney health in response to a request from the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
  • Provided feedback on how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) can advance racial equity, diversity, and inclusion within all facets of the medical research workforce and expand research to eliminate or lessen health disparities and inequities.
  • Joined the Council of Medical Specialty Societies and other medical specialty societies in opposing racism and supporting joint efforts to increase diversity, inclusion, and equity.

ASN will regularly report to the community on its successes and challenges, as it works to propel positive change on these issues essential to improving kidney care and the lives of professionals who provide that care. We encourage you to send your insights and feedback to president@asn-online.org.
