NIH All of Us Research Program: 100,000 Participants and 2019 Update

The All of Us Research Program, a groundbreaking research effort funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has officially enrolled over 100,000 core participants. The effort looks to collect data from one million individuals on their health, habits and location to look for patterns that may affects one’s health with the goal of accelerating research and developing personalized and highly effective health care.

The All of Us Research Program, a groundbreaking research effort funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has officially enrolled over 100,000 core participants. The effort looks to collect data from one million individuals on their health, habits and location to look for patterns that may affects one’s health with the goal of accelerating research and developing personalized and highly effective health care.

All of Us also recently announced its collaboration with Fitbit launching the Fitbit Bring-Your-Own-Device project , stating “Now, in addition to providing health information through surveys, electronic health records, and biosamples, participants can choose to share data from their Fitbit accounts to help researchers make discoveries. The project is a key step for the program in integrating digital health technologies for data collection.”

There will be more exciting announcements from All of Us in 2019 as it will pilot and launch several new features to give information back to participants including:

  • Returning lab test results and genetic information, including genetic disease risks and how genes may affect a person's response to medications.
  • Launching a new tool to view electronic health records.
  • Distributing education materials, lectures, and a newsfeed, so one can keep up with the latest developments from All of Us and in health and medical research.
     

All of Us is currently in open enrollment and the American Society of Nephrology believes health providers should encourage people with kidney diseases to participate.
