Kidney News Online (KNO) recently spoke with Michael Allon, MD, the inaugural Editor-in-Chief for the newest journal from the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney360. As the open access, online only journal will begin accepting manuscripts in September 2019, KNO wanted to learn more about Dr. Allon and the ideas behind the new journal.
The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) today announced the appointment of Michael Allon, MD, as the first Editor-in-Chief of Kidney360, ASN’s new online journal launching in January 2020.
Dr. Allon is a Professor of Medicine at University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Affairs and the Medical Director of Dialysis Operations in the Division of Nephrology. He has a longstanding clinical research interest in dialysis and has published over 140 peer-reviewed papers on vascular access. He was the principal investigator at UAB for several multi-center clinical dialysis studies sponsored by NIDDK, including HEMO, DAC, and HFM.
Kidney360 will be a free global and peer-reviewed publication that offers original investigations, meta-analyses, and reviews of basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, health policy, population science, and global kidney research. Because the journal seeks to advance kidney science, it will encourage manuscript submissions that contribute to reproducibility, including those describing negative results.
ASN President Mark Rosenberg, MD, FASN, commented, “We are very pleased Dr. Allon will serve as the editor of Kidney360. Dr. Allon has decades of impressive experience in research, editing and patient care. I couldn’t think of a more qualified person for the job.”
