ASN is dedicated to advancing kidney research and supporting the next generation of investigators and fellows in their pursuit of groundbreaking kidney research discoveries.

Through his photography and films, Ed Kashi, who will receive the ASN President's Medal at Kidney Week, has documented how climate change and chronic kidney disease have become a public health crisis and social injustice.

Distinctions in delivery are notable between two options—either attending Kidney Week in-person in Orlando or attending in a fully virtual capacity—but both experiences promise to be enlightening and rewarding.

ASN's Innovations in Kidney Education Contest aims to stimulate the development and exchange of innovative tools to enhance teaching, generate excitement among students and trainees about the field of nephrology, and encourage meaningful interaction between team members.

With increasing uncertainties around variants of the COVID-19 virus, Kidney Week 2021 will now be a fully virtual meeting. Kidney Week is the world’s largest and most dynamic meeting of kidney professionals, where participants share their work, learn about the latest advances in the field, develop new collaborations, and listen to provocative exchanges between leading experts.

This year’s Kidney Week Education Committee and ASN staff are planning the first-ever hybrid Kidney Week to include in-person and virtual components. “Hybrid” can mean different things to different people, and ASN’s goal is to ensure a meaningful experience for every participant.

ASN’s annual Board Review Course & Update (BRCU) is an important educational activity for fellows preparing for initial board certification, reaching approximately 400 in-person/live learners and 400 online learners annually in a "normal" year. Due to the uncertainties and challenges relative to COVID-19, the BRCU 2020 in-person event was cancelled, and BRCU 2021 was offered for the first time as a fully virtual event.

ASN is accepting late-breaking clinical trials through September 1 for Kidney Week 2021, which will include virtual content and an in-person annual meeting from November 4th to 7th in San Diego, CA.

During Kidney Week, STARS participants attend poster sessions, “Meet the Expert” panel discussions, and networking opportunities with nephrology leaders. STARS participants are grouped by special interest and paired with mentors who offer guidance during the event.

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2021 American Society of Nephrology Lifetime and Mid-Career Awards. They have helped to improve the lives of patients with kidney diseases; advanced research, treatments, and patient care; and mentored trainees and junior faculty.
