On Wednesday, May 8, the House Appropriations Committee voted to send the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) appropriations bill to the House floor for consideration. The bill and accompanying committee report provides a total of $189.9 billion in funding, a nearly $12 billion increase over FY 19 enacted levels, and includes a number of priorities of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).
The KidneyX Summit continued today, April 30, 2019, with congressional perspectives; the role of NIH, FDA, and payors; and the nephrology investment landscape all addressed during the second day of the event.

The KidneyX Summit kicked off on April 29, 2019, with opening remarks by ASN President Mark Rosenberg, MD, FASN, who outlined how KidneyX is filling a much-needed gap in kidney care and will act as a catalyst to spur innovation in the space. Held at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC, the summit will continue on April 30 with congressional perspectives; the role of NIH, FDA, and payors; and the nephrology investment landscape.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Chief Technology Officer and the American Society of Nephrology have selected 15 winning teams for Phase 1 of the KidneyX Redesign Dialysis prize competition.
During the inaugural KidneyX Summit which began today, April 29th, and continues to through April 30th, the winners were announced. The winners presented their solutions to an audience of industry leaders with government, mechanical and bioengineering, investment, and medical product development.
The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) announced today that John R. Sedor, MD, FASN, has been appointed Chair of the Kidney Innovation Accelerator (KidneyX) Steering Committee. KidneyX is a public-private partnership between ASN and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Dr. Sedor will lead the KidneyX Steering Committee to drive innovation and investment in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases.
At the urging of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) members and American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) ambassadors’ calls and recent visits to Capitol Hill, a bipartisan group of 57 lawmakers wrote to the House Appropriations Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee asking them to include $25 million in funding for KidneyX. The letter , sent March 28, represents a major victory for KidneyX and is the latest example of a recent outpouring of public support for KidneyX from Congress and the Administration. Congressional Kidney Caucus Co-Chairs Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA-01) and Representative Larry Bucshon (R-IN-08), along with champions of patient-centered innovation, Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL-7) and Representative Brian Babin (R-TX-36), spearheaded the letter culminating the intensive efforts from congressional leaders and the kidney community.
At ASN Kidney Week 2018’s Opening Plenary Session, Ed Simcox, Chief Technology Officer and Acting Chief Information Officer at the US Department of Health and Human Services, announced that KidneyX: Redesign Dialysis is now accepting applications for its first phase.
In coordination with the University of Washington, Northwest Kidney Centers, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) hosted a listening session for KidneyX on Wednesday, August 22 in Seattle, WA.

1. Tell us about your background. How long have you been with HHS?
I’ve spent the bulk of my career working to create a better healthcare system with the goals of reducing cost and increasing quality and patient satisfaction. Much of my focus has been on health IT and innovative technologies dealing with challenges like EHR usability and interoperability. But I also have experience using innovation to improve healthcare operations.
