Nephrology Fellows' View

Dr. Lilia Maria Rizo Topete (Monterrey, Mexico) shares one of her memorable training experiences.

I think the most difficult experiences are those with patients with whom we have been more in touch. In my case, one of my most memorable experiences was with a young patient on our hemodialysis unit who did not have the resources for a kidney trasplant, had poor glycemic control, and major depression over the loss of a pregnancy. She started hemodialysis with the hope of improving her general condition and entering a transplant list to make a normal life. The patient has a torpid evolution and died from cardiac complications. It is sad to see that although we do everything we can, patients will sometimes have a catastrophic end.

On the other hand, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing our patients after a kidney transplant resume a normal life.
